Improving recycling to reduce impact on our environment

Our single biggest challenge is to improve the recycling levels of plastic in order to reduct the impact on the environment. In turn, this should improve the consumers' perception of plastic as a packaging material. Thevast majority of our product are made from recycled PET (rPET) which is completely recyclable and should be recycled whenever possible.

Pregis PET conforms to the following regulations & accreditations:

  • EEC Directive 97/48/EC UK statory instrument 1374 (1998)
  • EEC Directive 2002/72/EC
  • EEC Directive 1935/2004 (recycled)
  • FDA21.CFR 177.1630
  • BRC Technical standard accredited

Our material of choice is recycled PET (rPET)

In 2007, Pregis invested £5 million in extrusion technology to 'clean2 post consumer waste (PCW). Recycling PCW is the way forward and for Pregis our priority is to switch from EU PCW to waste to UK waste with an objective to be 100% UK PCW. Pregis has the capability to take granulated waste from UK granulation sites that is not fully cleaned and process it through our Vacurema system to elevate the quality of our material to food grade standard.

The Extrusion Process:

Post Consumer Recyclate is processed through Vacurema Extrusion Line. First the flake and grandulate is mixed and transferred to a high vacuum, high temperature reactor. The material can be dyed using an Extruder Screw and then passed through a roller gauge and on to large rolls ready to be used for packaging.
